Our Church Staff
The Rev. Dr. Elizabeth McCormick, Pastor
Betsy was installed as pastor of First Presbyterian Church on September, 18, 2016. She was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area and graduated with a Doctor of Ministry degree from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va. After 12 years of pastoral ministry in two Presbyterian congregations, she and her spouse served as Mission Co-workers of the Presbyterian Church, (U.S.A.) for 14 years. Betsy was a professor of theological studies at Nile Theological College in Khartoum, Sudan. Upon returning to the States, Betsy then served as an Interim pastor and a Designated pastor respectively. Her last form of ministry prior to coming to Bloomsburg was as chaplain at the VA Medical Center in Hampton, Va, serving as a counselor for veterans and spouses in the Family Support Program. She is also a Supervisory Candidate in the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. When certified as an Associate Supervisor, Betsy intends to extend the ministry of the church by providing clinical pastoral education for pastors serving congregations in the area. Her being pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Bloomsburg combines her gifts and love for teaching, mentoring, and pastoral care that are her strengths in ministry.
Mara is currently a senior music education and voice major at Bloomsburg University. She actively participates in many university ensembles, including the BU Concert Choir, BU Jazz Ensemble, and the BU Concert Band. She is also the president of Concert Choir and the vice president of the International Folk Dance Ensemble on campus, and is one of the current co-directors of the university’s student run A Cappella group, The Leading Tones.
In the spring of 2018, she will be singing with The American Choral Directors Association’s Women’s Repertoire Honors Choir, comprised of college and high school singers from eleven states. She will be touring with the university’s jazz ensemble to Berlin and The Czech Republic in summer 2018.
Harry Martenas, Organist/Pianist
Harry is our versatile and talented Church Musician. In addition to accompanying the Sanctuary Choir, Harry provides accompaniment to congregational hymns, both from the Fritsche pipe organ or the Blüthner piano.
On any given Sunday, you can be sure to sit back and meditate on God’s goodness while Harry often plays his own variations on familiar and favorite hymns. Eclectic in nature, pieces range from traditional sacred to modern jazz — and everything in between!
Harry is a member of the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society, the Atlantic City Convention Hall Organ Society, and an associate member of the American Institute of Organbuilders.
At home, he enjoys his rescue pets – Bear (Barry Chocolate Bear), a Rottweiler-St.Bernard mix, and Karma, a grey tiger cat.
Lisa Padner, Financial Secretary
Lisa is our Financial Secretary. Lisa has been a member of First Presbyterian Church since 2007. She has a degree in Economics from Rutgers University. She has worked the past twenty years as bookkeeper for her husband’s dental office and also has her own herb business. She enjoys reading, running, and gardening. Lisa lives in Orangeville with her husband, Bill and her three daughters.
Joyce Rex, Administrative Assistant
Joyce began her position as our Administrative Assistant in 2003. She is usually busy working on bulletins, newsletters, special projects or just the day to day items that need to be done. She enjoys the many members who stop by to say “hi” or bring projects for her to do. There is never a shortage of things to do around the office.
Joyce lives in the area with her husband, Matt. She enjoys working around their house. They have lots of cats but four live inside: Oscar, Little One, Munchkin, and Sammy. They rule their home… but isn’t that what cats are supposed to do?
Helen Fester, Sexton
Helen was raised in the rural Bloomsburg area. In 1977, she started her own cleaning business until 1995 when she started here at First Presbyterian Church. Helen enjoys going to car shows, watching the Mets, cooking and baking. She is married to Craig and has three children.
